Raygirl's art of the moment!************

Lovely character, lovely pose, lovely colouring...this pic is all lovely AND MORE. The lines are so crisp and clean as is the colouring, without detracting anything from the pose or character. All in all it's a fab piece of a quirky character

Now let me talk about advertising. Particularly TV advertising
TV advertising is everywhere, promoting everything from fancy perfume to the latest family car. It's loud and flashy as the companies vie with eachother for your attention, hailing their product as second only to Jesus. Normally I don't have a problem with this, and the same goes for kids advertising. We've all been suckered at one point by an ad for the latest, greatest toy.
But I have a problem when, through the course of their advertising, companies choose to make something that is patently not wrong or evil into something their product can help against.
My main gripe is this this advert:
[link]So what's wrong with this ad? My main grieveance is the concept that tying your laces the normal way is = EVIL.
Maybe i'm being melodramatic, but watch the advert. You have our 'hero', the elastic non-traditional laces girl, and the 'villain', a chick who goes around tying up people's laces the traditional way (admittedly she ties up everything). To adults this probably means nothing, but imagine a kid who's on the cusp of learning to tie their fiddly laces, the point where they will learn one of the skills of childhood, and this advert pops up to not only say 'hey you don't need to learn to tie your laces, get elasta-laces!' but also seemingly suggest that 'hey tying up those stoopid laces is for EVIL PEOPLE AND LOOSERS'.
I
don't have a problem with elasta-laces, I know lots of people (kids and adults) have problems tying their laces. They're easy to wear and can look smart and yes they cut out the need for tying laces. But I take issue with the message of this particular advert, which is shown often during ad breaks on kids TV. Why is tying your laces suddenly taboo and dorky? When I was a kid learning to tie your shoes by yourself was a HUGE achievement, some kids get rewards to learning to tie their shoes, it's an incentive to learn a new and very helpful life skill. By showing adverts like this surely that's insinuating that learning that skill is pointless and, horror of horrors, NOT COOL. Amirite? o0o
Anyways, i've said my piece.
Have you ever seen an advert that you thought was putting across the wrong message?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dedications

This journal is dedicated to -

Yay for finding more great artists who are also lovely people willing to accept critique and share some giggles. LaurieB is a fabulous 2d artist with some impressive pencil weilding skills and a unique style. Her female figures are cute and quirky and not your average pinups, and best of all SHE'S CANADIAN!

Past dedications:

How do i get dedicated? - By being a nice person, a good friend, a good artist, someone I like or admire, or all of the above
Dedicated but not on this list? Please let me know, sometimes i forget to add people to this list if i dedicated a journal to them in the past
What's with the CSS raye? I'm trying to cut down on the time it takes to load my DA page, cause frankly it's slowing down my compy...as well as a few other people's. And the dedications list is making my journals a bit long and tedious (sorry guys). But i'm not about to just junk it cause that wouldn't be right. So I put in a scrollbox! I hope this works better
